Actually, I can. These 3 simple words pack a powerful punch and happen to be one of my favorite phrases as of lately. I think of myself as having a growth mindset and often wonder how I can inspire that same mindset in those I support in our schools. It is soul crushing for me to hear the words- "that's not me, I can't do that, or even " that's just the way it is!" How do I empower and inspire someone to have faith in their efforts as well as helping them to see the benefits of being open to possibilities?
First, I believe it is all in the narrative we tell ourselves. It's in the vocabulary we use. I will challenge learners to use phrases such as "actually, I can" or "let me give it a shot!"
Second, I believe that talking about what a growth mindset looks like can be eye opening. Talking through scenarios and using phrases like "what if" can be used to inspire. Showing examples of situations that turned out better than expected can also empower learners to be open to possibilities.
Finally, I believe exposure is important. If I had not walked through the process of the coding and creating camp this summer, I would never have believed that I was capable to learn how to code! Exposing learners to ideas and letting them get their "hands on it" brings about a change in thinking. Although, I am not an expert coder, I certainly am willing to give it a shot now that someone inspired me to walk through something new. I plan to do the same for others!
